چکیده

We read with great interest the article published in Anatolian Journal of Cardiology by Astarcıoğlu et al. (1) entitled “ABO blood types: impact on development of prosthetic mechanical valve thrombosis.” Several risk factors of prosthetic valve thrombosis (PVT) are well known. The search for new categories of risks should continue to refine even more the initial therapeutic decision in PVT. In this work, the authors evaluated the association between blood group status and PVT. They reported that patients with non-O blood groups have greater incidence of PVT compared with O blood groups. This result suggests that non-O group may be a risk factor that favors developing PVT. It is increasingly recognized that individuals with non-O blood groups may be at elevated risk of venous and arterial thromboembolic events compared with individuals with blood group O. This increased risk has been attributed to higher concentrations of factor VIII and von Willebrand factor (2). Anatol J Cardiol 2017; 17: 75-80 Letters to the Editor 77

AB0 blood types: impact on development of prosthetic mechanical valve thrombosis

OBJECTIVE The non-O alleles of the ABO genotype have been associated with an increased risk of thrombosis. We aimed to assess the association between blood group status and prosthetic valve thrombosis. METHODS The association between AB0 blood group status and prosthetic valve thrombosis was assessed in this retrospective study. Transesophageal echocardiography was performed in 149 patients w...

Successful Use of Two Thrombolytic Drugs in Prosthetic Mitral and Aortic Valve Thrombosis

Introduction: Prosthetic valve thrombosis is a rare and severe complication of valve replacement, most often encountered with a mechanical prosthesis. The significant morbidity and mortality associated with this condition warrant rapid diagnostic evaluation. Although surgery is the first-line therapy in symptomatic obstructive mechanical valve thrombosis, thrombolytic therapy has been used as a...

Prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by multidrug-resistant Candida albicans in a patient with myelodysplasia syndrome: A case report and literature review

Background and Purpose: Candida endocarditis is an infrequent disease with a high mortality rate, which commonly occurs in immunosuppressed patients with cardiac valve replacement. We reported a 70-year-old woman diagnosed with Candida prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE). This study also involved a review of all published cases of Candida PVE from 1970. Case report: Herein, we reported a 70-ye...
